Tsunami 145 w/Rudder Description

THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE OF TOURING KAYAKS

The Tsunami 145 has built a reputation of being the "Swiss Army Knife of Touring Kayaks." Redesnged for the 2018 Season it is now packed with even more must have features. The improved aesthetics and addition of removable mesh deck storage bags and an under-deck storage area make this already feature-rich kayak something to talk about. Changes to improve paddler experience have been integrated into the hull – the flared sidewalls and increased volume above the waterline have been improved to provide more confidence and stability, while the longer waterline has increased speed and efficiency. Available in three sizes, the Tsunami has been optimised so that any paddler can feel comfortable regardless of their kayak’s length.

This is such a fun boat to paddle. I come from years of kayak fishing and bought a Pungo 140 for the days when I just want to paddle around. Well, that was so much fun I decided to get a boat to do more serious paddling and longer touring with. Once again, the Phase 3 seat is the most comfortable thing to sit on all day. The first thing I noticed getting into the Tsunami was that I became part of the boat. My legs went up under the sides of the hull into the thigh braces, the seat adjusts to push my legs into the braces. I felt quite connected to the boat, it became really easy to control side to side motion with my hips. Plenty of leg room to stretch out in and not smack the bottle holder under the deck with my knees. As far as paddling goes, this boat can perform. My first three trips out were all rainy windy days on wide open lakes ( 15-35kmh wind, 1-2 ft swells, white caps etc.) The boat goes where you point it, even without the rudder deployed it stayed true to course in the wind. I had waves washing over the deck, head on, sideways, didn't make any difference. This boat wanted to stay upright no matter what I tried to do, I was impressed with how stable this is in crappy conditions. I actually look forward to rough water days now - spend a couple hours paddling into the wind just to turn around and rocket back down the lake. On flat calm water, it doesn't take many paddle strokes to get up to a nice cruising speed, and it coasts a long way before coming to a stop. I'm not sold on the deck bags that come with the boat. Whatever you put in them is going to be wet all day, they are right under the drip line from the paddle blade. They do hold my travel mug of coffee and some snacks, but I will likely replace it with something more functional. What else, I like the Orbix hatches on the Pungo better then the soft seal hatches on the Tsunami, maybe I just need to get used to them. The rudder does a good job of holding course in the wind, and can turn the boat quickly when needed. Skid plate was a good idea. I never paddled the old Tsunami hull design, so I can't speak to the design changes. I can say that this kayak handles the water nicely in good and bad conditions. I'm looking forward to many long trips next season.
